Modal Auxilary -Activity

 Modal Auxiliaries

Ever heard someone say, “I can sing”, “You must study”, or “It might rain today”?
Guess what—they’re all using modal auxiliaries!

Modal auxiliaries are small but mighty words that change the meaning of a sentence. They add shades of possibility, permission, necessity, or ability. Without them, English would sound flat and boring.

What Are Modal Auxiliaries?

Modal auxiliaries are helping verbs (like can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would) that come before the main verb. They never stand alone; they team up with another verb.

Example:

  • I can swim (Correct)

  • I swim can (Nope, sounds like a broken robot!)

Different Powers of Modals

  1. Ability – what you can or cannot do

    • She can dance really well.

  2. Possibility – what may or might happen

    • It might snow tomorrow.

  3. Permission – what you may or may not do

    • You may use my pen.

  4. Necessity / Obligation – what you must or should do

    • You must wear a helmet while riding.

  5. Future / Politeness – what you shall or would do

    • Shall we go for coffee?
