Sem-II- Communication Skills- Meaning of Communication

 Meaning of Communication

The word communication comes from the Latin “Communicare,” meaning “to share.” And that’s exactly what we do—share thoughts, ideas, feelings, and sometimes unnecessary voice notes.

Language is our primary tool for building relationships. Without it, society would be chaos with better facial expressions. Whether you’re influencing others, expressing emotions, or simply trying to survive a professional meeting, effective communication is non-negotiable.

In simple terms, communication:

  • Helps us connect with people

  • Allows us to express feelings and ideas

  • Plays a key role in professional success and social growth

Or as one classic definition beautifully puts it:

Communication is a bridge of meaning that allows people to safely cross the river of misunderstanding.
And yes, that river is deep.

Definitions of Communication

Communication can be understood as:

  • The exchange of thoughts, messages, information, or opinions through speech, writing, or signals.

  • A process of transmitting information between individuals or organizations in a way that creates understanding and response.

In short: if the message is sent but not understood, congratulations—you just made noise, not communication.
